It is advisable to work in straight rows across the width of the canvas from left to right, completing each row before beginning the next.

This helps to ensure that the canvas does not pull out of the straight and, if a chart is used, that this is followed correctly.

Although experienced rug makers sometimes work in blocks of a few rows this can lead to trouble with an intricate pattern and the scheme is not recommended.
