Carpet and rug making
Avoid turning the canvas round. There is no incentive to do so when making a pile rug, but with flat stitches workers may feel a desire to experiment in this way and are warned most earnestly to resist such temptations as this practice is almost bound to lead to trouble and inaccuracies.
Cross stitch and its derivatives, already mentioned in Chapter Two, cannot be bettered for smooth-faced rugs.
They are strong, cover the canvas well (owing to the fact that they all "slope" on the surface in the working, i.e. they all cross the warp and weft threads at an angle), and they produce attractive results particularly when they are combined with one another.
They have also the advantage that they are very accommodating for certain types of design.
