Completion of rug edging
The edging is closely bound up with the finishing as well as the beginning of a rug. For a pile rug, as long as the worker is not liable to pull the rug out of shape in the making (as are some otherwise excellent workers), the following procedure has been found to be satisfactory.
-
Turn over and sew down the two cut edges of the canvas, one roughly
and the other properly
-
Work the sloping stitch over the two corners at each end of this latter edge.
-
With this edge at the top and the correct side of the canvas uppermost, begin the
plaited edge stitch at the right-hand corner (it will cover part of the sloping stitch already
worked), work from right to left all along the top edge, round the left-hand corner and
carry the plait a few inches down the left-hand selvedge.
-
Start again at the right-hand corner and work the plait a few inches down the right-
hand selvedge.
This method makes a strong framework for the start of the rug and the plait should be continued at intervals down the sides of the rug so that it is always a short way in front of the pile after that has been begun, opposite where a short pile, striped rug has just been started on jute to show this method of procedure.
