How to make rugs

An artificial gauge of any kind is quite unnecessary, in fact it is rather a nuisance, and the worker very rapidly gains mastery over the required length of the loops and the experience needed to vary this according to the size of the foundation, i.e. whether coarse or fine.
It has already been stated that the coarser the canvas the longer should be the loop and resultant pile.
If any help is needed, settling the left thumb comfortably into each loop as the work proceeds makes a good natural gauge of length when using the coarser canvases (although some of us have larger thumbs than others) but it is surprising how quickly the art of producing an even pile is acquired.
