Making rugs on your own

The needle is inserted at hole 3, and brought out at hole 1, passing over the loop of wool. The needle is then drawn down and pulled towards the worker, when it will be found that a knot has been made on top of the canvas.

The wool is then cut to the required length of the pile (say three-quarters of an inch) unless the same colour is to be used in the next stitch. In the latter case the needle is passed under the bar of canvas between holes 3 and 4 and through the loop of wool which will thereby have been produced.

The needle is drawn through until the loop is the length of the required pile.

The loop is then held down firmly with the left thumb , the wool is carried upwards  and the second movement of the stitch completed as before.

As long as the stitches are to be all of one colour the loops are continued along the row in this way, but every time a single stitch of a new colour is needed.
For the second and following rows the needle is inserted under the bar of the canvas immediately above the last completed row.
