Making rugs: stages
When the doubled part has been passed and the worker arrives at the single thickness of canvas a sigh of relief ensues, but a good job has been accomplished and the rough cut edge disappears into the pile to be seen no more.
As the pile rug grows it is necessary to double back most of the part already worked for convenient handling, and a long strong envelope inserted in the resulting fold of the rug between the piece being worked and that already done will prevent the current stitches from being sewn to the finished part of the rug (which will be underneath the envelope).
Cardboard is not suitable for this purpose because flexibility is desirable.
