Obviously it is wiser for a beginner to err on the side of making the loops slightly too long rather than too short as the pile can easily be cut shorter to the required length but not lengthened if the loops are made too short originally.

Slight trimming of the pile is always necessary and most people have favourite scissors for different types of needlework. Any good quality, sharp, medium-sized scissors do this trimming efficiently, but surgical scissors seem to be particularly good for the purpose.

Workers generally develop their own pet action for trimming but personal experience suggests that an even pile is most easily produced if the rug is held level (i.e. on a hori­zontal plane) on the knees or table and the cut edge pushed away slightly from the pile already worked when evening it up.
