Rug making: how to
For the sake of clarity the correct order in which the needle should pass through the holes of the canvas from the front or the back is indicated by numbers in the majority of the diagrams that illustrate the stitches throughout this book.
The canvas represented on all the diagrams is double mesh.
The needle is brought under a double weft bar of the canvas towards the worker from hole 1 to hole 2 and the wool drawn through until only a length a little more than the required length of the pile is left—say three-quarters of an inch .
The needle is then carried up to the left of this short end and the latter is brought straight down over the bar, the left thumb being placed on it at 5 to hold it firm.
