It should be noted that:

(i) If the cross stitches are worked in a straight line from right to left there will be, on the back of the canvas, one short vertical and one short diagonal stitch, the order of entering the holes, alternately from the back and the front, being 1, 2, 3, 4 and then out again at 3 for the next stitch.

(ii) If the cross stitches are worked in a line diagonally upwards from right to left there will be, on the back of the canvas, one short vertical and one short horizontal stitch, the order of entering the holes being 1, 2, 3, 4 and then out again at 2 for the start of the next stitch.

(iii) If the cross stitches are worked in a downwards straight line there will be, on the back of the canvas, one short vertical and one long vertical stitch, the order of entering the holes being 1,2, 3, 4, and down to 5 starting again from 5 for the next stitch.
