Rug making technique
As with Surrey stitch the wool is cut off after the first stitch in a row if a new colour is needed and the same process repeated, otherwise the worker proceeds along the row leaving the resultant loops to be cut later.
The second row follows on above the next double weft bar, i.e. the warp bars only are used and the double weft bars are left bare.
In both pile methods the loops should be cut as each row is completed. If several rows are worked before any loops are cut the odds are that many of them will be missed, and it is extraordinary how these show up when the rug is finished.
Even when cutting row by row it is easy to miss a loop occasionally, therefore this regular cutting is important or numerous odd loops will affect the finished look of the pile.
