Width of rug edging
The width of canvas over which the edging stitch is worked is purely a matter of personal preference and the three different widths which have been suggested may be summarised thus, the plait along the cut ends in each case approximating in width to that along the selvedge sides:
-
For double mesh canvas with folded selvedges, the end plaits should be worked over
the one double bar only as shown in the edging stitch diagrams. It will be about one-eighth
of an inch wide, varying according to the wool thickness.
-
For double mesh canvas with unfolded selvedges the end plait should be worked
over one row of complete holes (two double bars) giving a width of about a quarter of an
inch for 5s canvas, say, and of course varying with the canvas.
-
For single mesh jute canvas with the usual 8 threads to the inch, end plaits should be
over 4 threads (half an inch) and side plaits should be made of approximately equal width.
